What is DMA and why does it matter for disk/network throughput?

Direct Memory Access

DMA lets devices transfer data to/from RAM without CPU copying every byte—CPU sets up transfer, does other work, gets interrupt on completion.

  • Critical for disk and network throughput at Gbps rates.
  • CPU only involved in setup/teardown—reduces load.
Without DMA, CPU becomes bottleneck shuffling packets.
