What is swapping? When does the OS move pages to disk?

Swapping
Swapping moves entire process or pages to disk when RAM is full, freeing physical frames. Page faults pull data back—thrashing if over-subscribed.
- Modern OS uses paging more than whole-process swap.
- Swap space on disk—slower than RAM orders of magnitude.
- Symptom: high iowait, system feels frozen.
Connect to working set—keep hot pages in RAM.
